What options can I have with my pager? 

There are a variety of options that can enhance the usefulness of pagers. The most popular pager option is Voice Mail. Callers dial your voice-mail number and hear your voice as a greeting. The caller is then able to leave a voice message, when the message is completed, your pager will notify you that there is a recording on your voice mail. You may then phone in to your voice mail to hear the pager message. A pager voice mail service cost on average, an extra $5 - $10 a month. Other pager options include stock quotes, news updates, sports scores and weathers and traffic information are also available. 

What types of pagers are there?

 
Small enough to clip comfortably on your belt, pocket or purse, pagers come in five types: "Tone-Only," "tone and voice," numeric," "alphanumeric," and "two-way".  Tone-only pagers send out tones to alert you that you have received a pager message. Most tone-only pagers have two different tones, each correlating to one of two possible predetermined phone numbers. The sound of the pager tone tells you which number to call.   Tone & Voice pagers emit a tone alert and then a voice message when paged. Someone trying to reach you calls your pager number and leaves a recorded voice message. Your pager will then emit a tone or vibration alert and you hear the recording of the message the pager caller left, in the caller's own voice.  Numeric pagers are the most popular. They have a small screen that displays up to 20 digits. Some models of numeric pagers are available in a variety of contemporary and fun colors including neon green and hot pink. Some models of numeric pagers are now as thin as a credit card or embedded in a designer Swatch watch. · Alphanumeric pagers use a wide screen that can display both letters and numbers. The pager can receive messages up to 80 characters long, enabling the pager user to receive a complete message without having to return the call. Some models are capable of storing up to 20 messages in the pager's memory.  Two-way narrowband pagers allow pager subscribers to respond to the alphanumeric message directly from the paging unit and offer guaranteed delivery.
