36th District Court warns public of telephone payment scam

DETROIT (WXYZ) – The 36th District Court is warning the public of an ongoing scam in which people call members of the public from what appears to be the 36th District Court number, then demand payment of a warrant active, according to officials.

The notice says a ghost number is being used and it appears to be the actual courthouse number – 313-965-8700. However, court staff would never contact people by telephone to demand payment of an active warrant.

According to a press release, warrants can only be canceled in one of two ways: by posting the required bond amount and appearing on a scheduled court date, or by appearing before the court on the attendance register, if eligible.

There are also only a few valid payment methods, and paying by phone is not one of them. These methods are:

  • DivDat Kiosks – Click here for locations throughout the Detroit metro area.
  • By mail – Do not send cash. Place the citation number on the check or money order and make it payable to: 36thDistrict Court, 421 Madison, Attn. Finance Unit, Detroit, MI 48226.
