Theft of cell phones ends, I-95 chase

A man trying to buy a cell phone that had his money stolen attempted to follow the suspects by chasing them down I-95.

The incident happened around 4:28 p.m. on Monday, July 8, when the man drove to the Saugatuck Avenue neighborhood near I-95 to purchase a cell phone as part of a deal he said. he had concluded online with an acquaintance, Westport police said.

When the victim attempted to hand over $ 165 in cash for the phone, one of the two occupants of the vehicle the “vendors” were driving grabbed the money and started to leave, Westport police said.

The victim then gripped the vehicle door and first attempted to hang on to the vehicle door to prevent him from exiting.

The driver then allegedly started driving recklessly in an apparent attempt to get the victim to let go, which he eventually did, police said.

The victim told officers that he and a friend who lived in the area tried to follow the suspect to I-95, but after following him they eventually lost the vehicle as he left town from Fairfield.

The victim then went to the Westport Police Department and reported the crime. He was able to provide officers with a description of the occupants, the vehicle’s license plate and a photograph he had taken of the suspect vehicle, police said.

A thorough investigation was carried out by the Detective Office which ultimately led to the identification of the two suspects. The driver of the suspect vehicle has been formally identified as Jose Alvarez from Stamford.

Police have obtained a warrant against Alvarez and are currently seeking an arrest warrant for the second suspect.

On Thursday August 1, members of the Detective’s Office visited Alvarez’s home in Stamford where he was located and taken into custody.

He was charged with robbery, conspiracy to robbery and reckless endangerment. He was released after posting a $ 75,000 bond. He is due to appear in court on Monday August. 12.
