UP Express passengers can now use their phone or credit card before boarding the train to or from Pearson, thanks to new contactless payment options.
Starting Monday, March 11, UP Express customers can use Visa, Mastercard, American Express credit cards, their phone, or their watch’s mobile wallet, like Apple Pay or Google Pay, by tapping the payment method on their choice on a PRESTO device.
“Taping their credit card or phone to pay for public transit is what our customers have been asking for, and we’re excited to add that to the many improvements we’ve made to the PRESTO experience and the PRESTO app at last year,” PRESTO Acting Chief Fawad Ebraemi said. “Our work hasn’t stopped because of COVID-19, and contactless payment is another measure to help our customers travel safely upon their return.”
This latest rollout is part of Metrolinx’s overall plan to implement contactless payment options across the TTC.
“Our customers have been asking for more ways to pay, and we’re excited to roll out the next step with PRESTO contactless payment on UP Express,” said Phil Verster, President and CEO of Metrolinx. “We look forward to building on this launch and delivering it to our customers in the region.”
UP Express customers can continue to use their PRESTO card or e-ticket to pay for their ride if they wish.
In the future, Metrolinx also plans to add Interac Debit as a payment option for UP Express in the spring, which will be the first time a transit agency in Canada will have a contactless debit option.
